Projektinformationen

The post doctoral research is a solid attempt to search for scientific solutions to the increasingly observed devastating effects of natural shocks in developing countries. Formulated within the framework of a 3-year post doctoral research, the project will validate the multi-sector framework as relevant for a social science based analysis of risk management in developing countries, where risk markets and state oriented risk management institutions are often missing, or function only partially. The project aims at contributing to an improved understanding of socially embedded informal responses to covariate natural shocks, and their inclusion into broader risk management agendas, specifically in Cameroon and Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). SSA is chosen because it is hardest hit by covariate natural shocks in Africa, with catastrophic, long-term negative impacts on the livelihoods (ISDR/The World Bank 2008, Naude 2010). Results will deepen scientific apprehension of the role of social responses to covariate shocks, and support risk management service providers to more effectively manage covariate natural shocks in less costly ways. This project will: 1. Undertake an in-depth review of social and economic literatures on risks and shocks. 2. Empirically analyze the dynamics of informal response mechanisms amongst natural disaster victims in Cameroon. 3. Validate a multi-sector framework for risk analysis in SSA.
