Language Documentation and Psycholinguistics

Laufzeit: 3 Jahre

Projektinformationen

The professorship integrates language documentation with psycholinguistics (specifically, first language acquisition) and anthropology (specifically, language socialisation). It is concerned with developing a program that engages with research questions emerging at the intersection of the three disciplines, thereby extending aims, methods and theories beyond the restrictions of existing disciplinary boundaries. This thematic focus has the potential to (1) significantly shape the future of the field of language documentation, which currently explores ways of engaging with different disciplines, and to (2) advance theory building and method development in the fields of language acquisition, socialisation and documentation. The project compares monolingual and multilingual acquisition in Qaqet Baining, a language of Papua New Guinea. It seeks to develop an understanding of children's language in the small, endangered and often multilingual communities that tend to be the focus of language documentation. This includes the cultural contexts of language learning, the kind of language(s) used with and around children, and the outputs that children produce.
