Modern Migrants: European Paintings in American Museums The professorship sits at the crossroads of provenance research, art history, cultural studies and analysis as well as data science. Importantly, it is designed to exploit the promising intersection between the disciplines by considering provenance information beyond the individual biographies of objects. Instead, it reads them more broadly as empirical evidence of cultural and social phenomena across time and space. So far, no university research program is making use of the massive recent accumulation of provenance data in a specialized way that focuses on data software, input, and analysis. The initial research program "Modern Migrants: European Paintings in American Museums" will serve as a model for a new field of expertise: Provenance Studies through the analysis of data based qualitative and quantitative aspects of object-related provenance information. By studying at least 2,500 provenance records of Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, and Modern paintings the project will answer: When, why and how did European paintings end up in American museum collections? The professorship will address the extent to which their migration was caused by political conflicts and transatlantic art markets in the twentieth century. Furthermore, it will reveal the social, temporal, spatial, and conceptual network dimensions of transatlantic art markets with special focus on American collecting practices.
