Projektinformationen

Recent developments in protest mobilization across Central Asia and the Caucasus with participation of various community-based and national, formal and informal, civic and political organizations have heightened the need for understanding the range and diversity of social movement organizations that generate and promote the forms of collective action across the region. Despite the manifestly significant role of such organizations in developing and sustaining forms of collective action in the region in the past to date there have been no systematic attempts to determine the range and diversity of social movement organizations active in the region. But at the same time knowing the range and diversity of social movement organizations and the dynamics of their evolution is critical for understanding the range and diversity of protest activity generated by movements over time. This study seeks to remedy these problems by providing a systematic and encompassing account of social movement organizations that coexist in Central Asia and the Caucasus and the populations engaged in them. Specifically, the project intends to determine the extent to which social movement organizations shaped the cycles of public protest in the region and examine the way in which they evolved and changed over time. The findings should make an important contribution to the field of social movement research in the context of Central Asia and the Caucasus. By focusing on social movements from the angle of organizations active in them the project will provide an important opportunity to advance our understanding of the degree to which social movement organizations promote and sustain the forms of collective action in Central Asia and the Caucasus and shine important light on the dynamics of protest mobilization in the region.
