Projektinformationen
In the last decade or so, Russia's assertive foreign policy and influence in the post-Soviet neighbourhood, especially in Ukraine, has become an undermining factor to both domestic and external democratisation efforts. Russia's support to authoritarian regimes in Central Asia might be both intentional and unintentional, but this does not make it less successful. The proposed research will explore whether and how Russia promotes autocracy, analyze its motivation behind autocracy promotion in Central Asia, and identify the range of available autocracy promotion mechanisms and instruments employed by Russia in Central Asia through an in-depth case study of Russian influence in Kyrgyzstan. This research project does not explore the moral side of autocracy promotion. Russia is by no means a villain in this research project: many powerful nations assert their influence on other countries through peaceful and violent means. What this research will explore is how a former great power reinvents itself under contemporary circumstances.
