Projektinformationen

Late Antique and Early Islamic Studies (LAESSI): Establishing a New Subdiscipline in Germany Studying the Islamic origins is hampered by limited expertise in transcultural languages, disciplinary boundaries and differing analytical frameworks. Although over the past decades some innovative results of contextualizing early Islam within the late antique framework have been gained, structurally (i.e. regarding professorial chairs, degree programs or teaching material) this subdiscipline is still in its infancy and offers numerous desiderata. In German-speaking countries, none of these structures exist. In light of this, it is planned to institutionalize "Late Antique and Early Islamic Studies (LAESSI)" as a new subdiscipline of historical studies, to develop multi-perspective teaching material that takes up this paradigm and to undertake innovative transcultural explorations in the longue dure´e with minimal linguistic and disciplinary boundaries as well as new analytical frameworks. These goals are to be achieved, among others, with the following instruments: - The establishment and operation of an interdisciplinary team of well-trained scholars; - The production and testing of solid training manuals - The investigation of five cross-cultural, interdisciplinary research topics that are crucial to the LAESSI subdiscipline.
