Projektinformationen

The project will build upon the existing tools and previous results to implement a botanical information infrastructure that will be maintained sustainably and bridge to future developments in the fields of botany and biodiversity in Georgia. Own research has provided substantial new insights on the evolution of plant diversity in the Caucasus and in Georgia and underscored the need to make new knowledge on plant diversity available in a structured way. At the same time, the availability of biodiversity data and information architectures have progressed enormously at international level. The World Flora Online (WFO) manages a global taxonomic backbone of land plants and the Euro+Med PlantBase including the Caucasus works at a continental level to integrate data on the taxonomy, occurrence and status of plants, based on the relevant taxonomic and floristic literature. The project aims at synthesizing the taxonomic and floristic knowledge from Georgia in a freely accessible, dynamic database infrastructure which is linked to international information systems. In this way, the project will lead to the publication of a modern checklist for Georgia, online and potentially also in print, support Georgia's contribution to the World Flora Online, the Global Biodiversity Information facility and improve its representation in the Euro+Med PlantBase which includes the whole Caucasus. Most of the work shall be implemented in the Georgian National Herbarium/Ilia State University, and smaller amounts each in the Caucasian herbarium at the Georgian National Museum and the Batumi Botanical Garden with its herbarium.
