Projektinformationen

The goal of the Referentiality Project (RP) is a contribution to an empirically based theory of reference in natural language. The database is a set of text corpora of twelve endangered languages from all over the world, selected from The Language Archive: Aché/Paraquay, Baure/Bolivien, Beaver/Kanada, Chintang/Nepal, Gorani/Iran, Hocak/USA, Isubu/Kamerun, Savosavo/Solomon Inseln, Sri Lanka Malay/Indien, Teop/Bougainville, Vera'a/Vanuatu, Wichita/USA.The general method is corpus typology, i.e. the theoretically-based extraction of inductive generalizations by a comparative analysis of the data. In its initial phase, RP will have to standardize the format of data representation in the participating corpora in order to allow the application of retrieval and analysis procedures across the twelve languages. Referentiality encompasses two subdomains, individuation of a referent on the basis of a concept and (re-)identification of a referent in discourse. The strategies employed by languages to achieve this are highly diverse. RP is expected to not only bring up new empirical phenomena in this domain, but to also enrich the theory of referentiality by new linguistic distinctions and operations.
