Projektinformationen

While colonialism and colonial rule were important aspects of the histories and lived realities of East Africa's coastal communities, there has been reluctance by archaeologists to study the material consequences of colonialism. The proposed study will employ an approach that is explicitly interdisciplinary, in order to investigate occurring changes and continuities of material styles and identities, changed networks of interaction, settlement patterns or food production systems. Field work by means of modern excavation techniques, digital surveying and extensive probing for zooarchaeological and archaeobotanical research will take place at promising sites like Pangani and Tongoni on the northern Tanzanian coast. Also written historical texts and oral traditions as well as memory of living people will be used to further shed light on the transitional process. Central elements of the research such as archaeobotanical investigations on change and continuity of domestic and wild plants or spatial analysis of artefact scatters and settlement location factors will be methodically supported by international collaboration partners.
