Projektinformationen
Africa is a region in transition, where local realities encounter global change. In particular, economic and financial mechanisms for the conservation of ecosystems and their services, are transforming people's livelihood pathways, raising significant questions over equity, sustainability and prosperity. The proposed project aims to assess the effects of Payment for Ecosystem Service schemes on governance, livelihoods, and forest conditions in Mt. Elgon transboundary ecosystem in Kenya. Lessons on what worked and to who will provide insights on how individual or collective social actors can manage and protect resources efficiently and develop sustainable livelihood strategies under present social and environmental conditions. The project will be a three year partnership between a postdoctoral fellow from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and technology (JKUAT) and scholars from the Institute of Environmental Economics and World Trade at the Leibniz University of Hannover. The projects intra-Africa collaborations will also include the Africa Climate Policy Center at the UN commission in Africa, the Kenya Forest Service and the University of Eldoret. The project also aims to build a network of German and African scientists for theoretically-informed and evidence based knowledge exchange on processes of contemporary livelihood transformation in the wider region.
