Establishment of a structured doctoral program at AUG with a strong research and academic partnership in the direction of sustainable agriculture and food systems is a result of 16 years of bilateral research partnership between the Faculty of Organic Agricultural Sciences, University of Kassel, Germany (UNIKASSEL), Germany and the School of Agricultural and Natural Sciences of Agricultural University of Georgia, Georgia (AUG). The SAFS structured graduate program will be a thematically-oriented doctoral study program, which is the first of its kind at AUG. Through inter-transdisciplinary research studies, senior and junior researchers can construct proximate research cooperation to analyze the complex and interconnected issues in agriculture and food systems in Georgia and the region. The SAFS graduate study program will also focus on career development and creating more opportunities for national and international academic mobility. The core pillars of the SAFS project's sustainability are the cluster-oriented research groups that focus on evidence-based policy research, establishment of an advanced colloquium system with routine meeting among research team colleagues and senior researchers, an inter-transdisciplinary network, solid collaboration with partner institutions, well-structured and harmonized system of supervision, research and learning components of the SAFS program, bi-lateral exchange of PhD students and scientist supervisors, and project-specific public-private partnership (PPP). Beside these elements, e-learning components in the syllabi and rolling funds from graduates of AUG as well as networking with Alumni and the Knowledge fund will provide a strong network for future PhDs at AUG. The program will be dedicated to achieving measurable and verifiable outcomes and the project milestones. Our other collaborating institutions will also provide extensive supportive resources to this project.
