Projektinformationen
The digitalization of our society changed societal decision-making processes. For example, social media platforms have become rooms of public discourse with ambivalent consequences. On the one side, social networking allows people to connect with each other from all over the world and spread information without costs. On the other side, phenomena such as fake news, echo chambers, and filter bubbles have emerged as serious problems and may hinder the solution of societal challenges such as climate change. The project investigates this ambivalent connection from the perspective of science education, which can be described as an understanding of social networking as a subject-specific and often informal learning process. Within the project the project owners uncover (1) the usage of social media sites and identify relevant platforms and behaviors that affect peoples' views on climate change. Besides this, they define (2) needed literacies to act competently in social networks and (3) explore possibilities to foster the relevant competencies with suitable interventions. The fulfillment of these project aims will be achieved by combining classical approaches in combination with innovative methods, which will be supported by the computational sciences. The overall project results will contribute to a better understanding of the role social media within the exemplary topic of climate change and possibilities to prepare people for acting competently in online discourses on respective social media platforms.
