Projektinformationen

In this ambitious and forward-looking research project, a joint team of science communication and education researchers from Germany and Israel works on the concept and measurement of science literacy in adult life. This is carried out against the background of future developments of artificial intelligence, particularly with regard to applications and devices designed to take over tasks in the communication process that were previously the preserve of humans. The project is located at the intersection of science communication, human-machine communication and science education. It asks how users perceive an AI system as a science communicator, and how they use the provided content to decide on science-related questions of everyday life. Project Debater, the first AI technology to meaningfully engage in a live debate with a human, is used to create balanced content on various science-related and socially relevant issues. This will be used in interviews and online surveys to improve the measurement of science literacy. The findings help inform media literacy and digital literacy education and technology design to improve humanity's AI tools. The project will start in fall 2022 and run for three years.
