Sinking Cities: Cultural Heritage as a transformational resource

Initiative: Pioniervorhaben: Gesellschaftliche Transformationen

Projektinformationen

Our ability to adapt to climate change is not limitless. If we do not enhance the adaptive capacity of our societies, adaptation may no longer be an option. Culture is a decisive factor for the ability of communities to transform and adapt. Any substantial and sustainable adaptation requires societal and cultural transformation towards a more ecologically balanced and socially integrated, fair society. Here, cultural heritage plays an important part as a source for transformative knowledge that is still overlooked and often even neglected in climate adaptation discourses. The research project seeks transformative knowledge about the potential of cultural heritage and cultural formats with a focus on coastal cities and rising sea levels to influence transformation processes. It will pioneer new knowledge about how the cultural sector can underpin adaptation processes, overcome soft limits to adaptation, and support transformational approaches. The project team focuses on three case studies in Bremen, Jakarta and Alexandria with real-world laboratories in each city. Through its profoundly transdisciplinary structure, the research project co-develops transformational knowledge via cultural events together with artists, scientists and society, and shares it through a global network of scholars and artists.
