Projektinformationen

Lignin is an abundant biopolymer with considerable untapped potential. It occurs as a by-product of paper and biofuel production and is usually disposed of as waste. The aim of the project is to utilize lignin waste streams for the development of crop protection products. Crop plants are exposed to phytopathogens such as bacteria, viruses and fungi, which can significantly reduce crop yields. Effective chemical pesticides have harmful effects on the environment and human health. Thus, there is a great demand for environmentally friendly biopesticides. The project team aims to develop a biopesticide by chemical functionalization of lignin biopolymers. The aim is to achieve high efficacy against plant bacteria such as Erwinia amylovora (fire blight), Pseudomonas syringae (frost damage, leaf wilt) and plant viruses such as the tobacco mosaic virus (growth inhibition). The investigations include fungal pathogens in order to obtain an antimicrobial solution with a broad spectrum of activity. The ultimate goal is to formulate a spray coating solution for plants using the functionalized lignin biopolymer and test it in the greenhouse.
