Projektinformationen
The project will link ecological and socio-economic approaches in developing a framework for an efficient control of overgrazing, enabling a sustainable rural development in representative sections of the steppe, semi-desert and mountainous regions of Azerbaijan. In a landscape-ecological analysis vegetation will be characterised and classified down to the smallest scale. Based on this analysis the potential of biomass production for all grasslandtypes will be estimated and areas particularly sensitive (erosion, biodiversity) will be identified. At these sites the utilization should be reduced or stopped at least temporarily. Accordingly, estimates of the necessary reduction of livestock within defined areas of the study regions will be made. Special attention is paid to the impact of such reductions on the different groups of land-users affected. The intention of the project is to present generally applicable ways of solving the ecological problems on a socio-economic level. To be successful in the frame of the socio-economic subproject one has to focus necessarily on the household level of land users with their different organisation structures. It has to be considered, whether solutions for an increase of household incomes can be found in farming activities or in of-farm purchases. An advanced technique in production of fodder reserves and its dispersion has to be seen as a crucial factor for the optimisation of farming pratice.
