Projektinformationen

The proposed research module aims to investigate and understand the socioeconomic causes of Islamist radicalism and political violence in Egypt and Tunisia after the Arab uprisings. Given the short time frame and existing constraints on field research, key methods applied include a systematic review of the existing scholarship, a statistical analysis of relevant data as well as expert interviews. Since the main project to which this module will be added is analyzing the dynamics of non-violent socioeconomic contention in Egypt and Tunisia, the proposed module's focus on the socioeconomic roots is well in line with the overall focus of this project, while the interest in Islamist actors and violent resistance, at the same time, adds a dimension that is, so far, not addressed by the project.
