Projektinformationen

This study proposes to examine internal land rush and how the associated transformation in land relations affect smallholders at the margins of the land tenure system in northern Ghana. The research will investigate: i. The socio-political and economic factors driving the rise of land acquisitions by medium-scale investors in agriculture. ii. How these medium-scale acquisitions occur within northern Ghana's diverse institutional and land governance frameworks. iii. The relationship between medium scale acquisitions and large scale land grabs by corporations. iv. How trends in land acquisitions by both foreign and domestic medium-scale investors are influencing land relations and affecting opportunities for smallholders in agriculture along the margins of Ghana. By generating such knowledge, the study will be contributing ideas on how to regulate and manage land rush for smallholder inclusive agricultural development. This research builds on previous research in Ghana but focuses on northern Ghana which has distinct and more entrenched customary land tenure systems. With communal land ownership being a dominant feature of land holding in northern Ghana, an understanding of how land acquisitions by medium-scale investors influence land markets and land relations is particularly important for the second phase of the ongoing reform of Ghana's land administration. In addition to studying the institutional, socio-economic and cultural dimensions of medium scale land acquisitions, the study will analyze the intensity of medium scale acquisitions by obtaining data on sizes of acquisitions through surveys and the compilation of data from the Lands Commission and Town and Country Planning Department.
