Projektinformationen

Chronic inflammatory diseases are a hallmark of industrialized societies and arise as consequence of a misled immunological host-environmental interaction. Environmental microplastic has cristallized as a major environmental burden worldwide with unconceivable long term effects on marine and terrestrial ecology. Whereas increasing research efforts are beginning to unravel the detrimental consequences of microplastic on marine ecology, the repercussions on human health are completely unknown. This project will implement a model of chronic microplastic exposure in-vitro and in-vivo using three-dimensional intestinal epithelial organoid models and murine models of intestinal inflammation to test the hypothesis that microplastic acts as an independent risk factor on gastrointestinal organ function. This proof of concept study will provide scientific evidence for the potentially harmful effects of microplastic on human health and will help to establish public awareness on the repercussions of human-driven ecological changes on human health.
