Building a Plant Diversity Information Infrastructure for Armenia

Initiative: Zwischen Europa und Orient - Mittelasien/Kaukasus im Fokus der Wissenschaft
Ausschreibung: Ausschreibung: Strukturell orientierte Maßnahmen

Projektinformationen

The project will build upon the existing tools and institutions to implement a botanical information infrastructure that will be maintained sustainably and bridge to future developments in the fields of botany and biodiversity in Armenia.Own research provided substantial new insights on the evolution of plant diversity in the Caucasus and in Georgia and underscored the need to make new knowledge on plant diversity available in a structured way. At the same time, the availability of biodiversity data and information architectures has progressed enormously at international level. The World Flora Online (WFO) manages a global taxonomic backbone of land plants and the Euro+Med PlantBase including the Caucasus works at a continental level to integrate data on the taxonomy, occurrence, and status of plants, based on the relevant taxonomic and floristic literature. The envisaged project aims at synthesizing the taxonomic and floristic knowledge for higher plants and lichens from Armenia in a freely accessible, dynamic database infrastructure which is linked to international information systems. This way it will support Armenia's contribution to the World Flora Online, improve its representation in the portal of the Euro+Med PlantBase including the Caucasus and of course to present a modern checklist for the country in Armenia itself (ideally online and in print). Most of the work shall be implemented at the Takhtajyan Institute of Botany of the National Academy of Sciences which houses the herbarium ERE.
