Lakota is a Native American language spoken in the northern plains of the US and in central Canada by several thousand people, almost all of whom are more than 50 years old and also fluent in English. Lakota music, dance, costumes, stories, and philosophy are often used by non-Indians as stereotypes for "Indian" characteristics in general. The formal language is well documented in writing, but we have little conversational or other spoken data. The project "Archiving spoken Lakota" will take video recordings made just a few years ago and audio recordings made in the early 1970s and annotate them in ELAN. Ms. Della Bad Wound will transcribe and translate the recordings, and Prof. David Rood will add grammatical analyses and additional notes, making substantial samples of the spoken language accessible to younger community members and scholars alike.
